Become our next Democracy Champion

People with learning disabilities and autistic people have the same right to vote as anyone else. They have a right to have their say, and to understand how decisions that affect their lives are made.

A Democracy Champion is someone who helps the people around them to take part in democracy. Whether that’s having a conversation, supporting someone to register to vote, or delivering a session. Every Democracy Champion will make a difference in their own way.

Anyone can be our next Democracy Champion, including:

You don’t need any prior knowledge to join. What matters is a commitment to supporting people to form their own views.

By signing up to become a Democracy Champion, you will:

More about the Democracy Champion programme:

My Vote My Voice is on a mission to encourage people with learning disabilities and autistic people to vote. They often look to trusted staff for guidance, but many staff lack the confidence or knowledge to start these conversations. We want to work with you to change that.

This work is made possible thanks to a grant from The Electoral Commission[link], the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. We’re very proud to have their support.

What does a Democracy Champion do?

As a Democracy Champion, your role is to help the people around you. This can be the people you support, your colleagues, or your wider community. You’ll help them understand their right to vote and to feel confident in taking part in democratic life. You will help them access information and support them to build the confidence they need to make their own choices.

As a Democracy Champion, you might:

No two Democracy Champions will do exactly the same things. What matters is that you use your training and the Democracy Champions Toolkit to make democracy more accessible for the people around you.

What will training look like?

Training will be a half-day session across England during the Summer of 2026. We will offer both in-person and online sessions, so you can choose what works best for you.

The topics we will cover include:

Your travel and expenses can be covered: If you would like, we can cover most expenses you might incur to travel to and attend the training. This includes things like travel and care costs.

Did someone say lunch? In-person training will include a break with lunch or refreshments provided.

What happens after training?

Completing your half-day Democracy Champion training is just the beginning. Once you’re trained, you’ll be ready to start making a real difference in the lives of people with learning disabilities, autistic people, and our democracy by making sure everyone’s voice can be heard.

Paying it forward:

As a Democracy Champion, you’ll be supported to deliver activities, sessions, and conversations with the people around you. This includes your colleagues, the people you support, or your wider community. Your Democracy Champion toolkit will be packed with everything you need to get started, including guides, activities, worksheets and further resources.

Making sure you’re not out of pocket:

Every Democracy Champion who delivers activities and events will receive a grant to make sure you’re never out of pocket. This is there to support you to do as much as possible without any financial barrier getting in the way.

Ongoing support:

We are here to support you. You can always contact us at info@myvotemyvoice.org.uk. We’ll be on hand to answer any questions, talk things through, and cheer you on. We’ll also keep you updated on upcoming events, activities, and opportunities to get more involved.

Everyone has a right to have their voice heard. Help us make sure no one gets left behind.

Why your organisation should get involved:

Democracy is for everyone, and organisations like yours play a crucial role in making that a reality. People with learning disabilities and autistic people are less likely to vote than the general population, often due to a lack of accessible information and support. By getting involved in the Democracy Champions programme, your organisation can help change that.

Supporting your staff or volunteers to become Democracy Champions is an investment in them and the people they support. It comes at no cost to your organisation. Getting involved means:

What’s in it for the people you support?

Having a Democracy Champion in your organisation means the people you support will have someone they know and trust to help them exercise their right to vote and take part in democracy.
