Key deadlines for the 2026 elections
- Register to vote by 20th April
- Submit your application for a postal vote or a postal-proxy vote: 21st April @ 5:00 PM
- Apply to vote by proxy: 28th April @ 5:00 PM
- Apply for free voter ID: 28th April @ 5:00 PM
- Polling day: 7th May

Where are elections taking place?
In May 2026, elections are taking place:
- Scottish Parliament elections
- Senedd Cymru elections
- Mayoral elections in England
- Across nearly half of all of England’s councils

Why is voting in local elections important?
Local elections are important because it’s here that decisions are made about the services that we all rely on day-to-day – including social care, accessible transport and leisure centres, as well as police, education and roads.
