What does the prime minister do?

The leader of the political party that wins the general election becomes the Prime Minister (PM for short).

The PM is the head of the government and leader of the country. Their official house is 10 Downing Street, London.

The PM’s first job is to choose the MPs who will help run the Government. These people are called cabinet ministers.

The job of the PM and the government is to come up with ideas and plans about how to run the country. These ideas and plans are called policies.

The government needs lots of different policies to run the country. To make this easier to manage, the government is split up into different offices. These are called departments.

The PM chooses cabinet ministers to run each department. Together with the PM they make decisions about how to run the country.
